Remembering Cabbage Patch Kids
Back in the 80's my daughters could not wait to get their hands on a Cabbage Patch Kid. It was a time when CPK's were the impossible-to-find toy of the season. (Tickle-Me-Elmo and his demand had nothing on CPK's!) They were about six and seven when Santa came through and delivered their beloved "preemies" Retina and Rex (remember they came already named and with birth certificates). Here they are on either side of their cousin, snuggling those babies!
Fast forward twenty five years to Christmas 2012. Both of my daughters now have children of their own and this Grama still had their CPKs (and their Preemies with all the clothes) from long ago. This year I passed them on to my grandchildren and they could not have been more well-received! Even my "all boy" grandson was thrilled when he opened his suitcase full of clothes and baby!
I wrote them each a letter and tucked it in the suitcases to let them know their babies' names, exactly how long these babies have been loved and by whom!
Seeing these happy faces loving on these babies makes me extremely happy (and so glad that I am a bit of a packrat and have these memories to pass on to my grandchildren).

There is nothing more special than a little girl and her doll! What wonderful memories -- and even better for you since you're getting a second set! My own daughter also got her CPD in the mid 80s somewhere and she loved her. Her daughter (my grand) is crazy over American Girl dolls!

These photos are so adorable.....your grkids are cute as can be! My daughter just passed on her CPK to her 5 yo daughter. Funny when we visit AmGirl store she wants to take that along......and living near the CP Hospital here in GA....we like to vist now and then. Yep.....she takes her AG doll. I'm like....is there some etiquette about this?????
I am also thrilled to get your old card suggestion!! My mom had saved the early ones from my first couple years..thought I'd put in a scrapbook.....but love this idea!Going to rummage thru my kids' old stuff too!

I am so happy you joined the GRAND Social! And what a fabulous post to share. What a fantastic gift for your granddaughters. I wish I would have had the foresight to keep the CPK my girls had. I have the Furbies (the product of my first-ever Black Friday scramble!). But CPK would have been far cooler.

Awwww, my girls LOVED Cabbage patch kids! There are still one or two floating around at each of my grandkids homes. They are delightful memories, aren't they! Thanks for a lovely visit.
Oh, your grandkids are so beautiful! It's so great that you saved the dolls and gave them to them to the kids, and they look like they love them! They were such a big deal, around here people waited in lines all night to get them. I think they were expensive too, weren't they? I gave my little daughters knock-offs, when I was able to buy kits, (real inexpensive at a fabric store), and they didn't know the difference, but they are valuless. and long gone. I have since acquired some real CPKs and I like having them around with other vintage toys at my house. My girls did have some of my Barbies though. I had a Bubble Barbie, Ken, Midge,and Skipper.

First of all, your grandchildren are beautiful! (But you already know that!) Secondly, you brought back so many crazy CPK memories! I don't even think my oldest daughter at the time knew what they were, let alone want one - but my mom and I sure did! Grandma would run over to babysit so I could stalk nearby Montgomery Wards just as they opened. Eventually, we found our first one, "Ernie." It was so much fun sewing for him and I still have all the clothes, too, plus his multiple siblings! Thanks for the memories!
I remember those CPK. When I was in high school and working at K-Mart I remember the mob of people waiting outside for the store to open.
